Welcome to Jai Bratton's web site. Jai is an extremely talented and respected international dressage rider and trainer based in Devon. Classically trained by some of the best names in Germany and Holland he offers a wealth of experience to all.

He stands by his theory that there are 'no shortcuts' and believes that most horse and rider combinations can achieve advanced level so long as the basics are true and correct.

From Novice to Grand Prix Jai welcomes anyone who has a passion for improving their working relationship with their horse and want to perform to the best of their and their horses ability.

Information and Services

Having qualified as a BHSI, Jai worked at the world renowned Gleneagles Equestrian Centre under the watchful eye of Captain Mark Phillips, William Micklem and Ernest Dillon. Although a keen eventer at the time, it was becoming clear that he had a gifted talent when working horses on the flat.Jai decided to turn his focus on dressage and trained for two years with Judy Harvey (International Rider and Judge and also a member of the Olympic Team Selection Committee). He then moved to Germany to work for Herr Jurgen Koschel who, at the time, was Holland's Olympic Dressage Team trainer. On Herr Koschel's recommendation, he then went to work for Ullrich Kasselmann at the most prestigious and successful young horse sales in the world - Performance Sales International (PSI) in Germany. Here he 'prepared' and 'backed' young horses for the auction sales and also trained the more advanced horses for competition and sale. Wanting to work at a more competition orientated yard, Jai moved to Holland, to work for the Olympic Rider and Coach, Bert Rutten. During his time there Jai felt that he was in the presence of a 'true Horse Master' not once seeing him 'take a backward pull' with any horse no matter how unruly, this has stayed with Jai and he truely feels that dressage should not be forced or aggressive. Jai then moved to 4 times Olympic Rider Anna Van Olst's yard where he prepared and rode horses for the ESI auction and helped to train the international horses within the yard. Having spent over 6 years in Europe Jai felt it was time to return to England where he began working for Louise Woof at the Maximillian Stud in Devon. Jai is the resident rider and trainer for the stud and has a selection of competition horses coming through the ranks, with a couple of exciting prospects in the wings. October 2011Huge congratulations to the Witheridge Riding Club Quadrille who have qualified for Olympia!!! Jai and Helen have both been helping them with their preparations and all their hard work has paid off!September 2011Having had such a great season we were full of excitement for the National Championships at Stoneleigh. Unfortunately this was obviously not meant to be our show and we had some dissapointing results and the tests were not on top form. It just goes to prove that at the end of the day no matter how well you prepare some things just happen!!! Well at least we all have time to reflect on our holidays.August 2011Jai has received a wild card for the PSG at the NATIONALS!!!! We are all thrilled. So he will be contesting the PSG on the Thursday and then the Inter1 on the Friday and if he finishes in the top 15 , he will qualify for the Inter 1 kur on the Saturday.Jai and Maximillian Eliott made the 5 hour journey to Somerford Park North West Regional Championships very worthwhile. They came second in the Prix St George, pipped by just 3 marks. They won the Intermidiare 1 with 69% which was fantastic. Next show will be the Nationals!!!! July 2011Hartpury CDI*** was a fabulous show. It was both Jai and Eliott's first International show and we were thrilled with the outcome. They both looked very smart with their newly acquired Union Jacks, although I think Jai was jealous of the size of Eliotts saddle cloth badge! The PSG went well considering poor Jai got a fly in his eye at the beginning of the test and we all know how horrid that is, so most of the test was done with one eye! The Inter 1 went very well and they were placed a very impressive 9th, which not only meant a placing but also qualification for the Inter 1 Kur. The Kur went well as it was the first time that they had performed it in competition. Despite being a little out of sink with the music, they still achieved over 66% and gained high marks for the technical performance. So all in all we all came away feeling very happy with theie performance at the show. The focus is now on the regional championships, Jai and Eliott will be taking part in the PSG and Inter 1 with the hope that they qualify for the National Championships in September. June 2011We have just about recovered from Wellington Premier League, which was a great show. On the first day Jai and Eliott gained a score of over 66% in the PSG, which for the first test of the show, we were delighted with and he came 5th out a very large class. In his second competition day he came 6th in the PSG with 68.51% and came 7th in the Inter 1 with 66.84% despite making a very costly mistake in the 3 time changes, which with 3 judges certainly made an impact to his end score! We have been notified that Eliott and Jai are on the long list for Hickstead International in July, so fingers crossed they have made a good impression at the Premier League shows.Jai has been asked to compete at Pompadour CDI*** at the end of the month!!!! We are thrilled to be asked.Hickstead Premier Leauge was, as ever a geat show. Eliott and Jai had some great results over the 3 days, the best result being third in the Inter 1 on the final day. We are also delighted that Jai and Eliott have been selected to compete for GB at Hartpury International in July. This is Jais first time to ride for GB, quite an achievement which was celebrated with a lovely bottle of bubbles! He has also been made a reserve for the International at Hickstead, so you never know........May 2011Addington Manor Premier League was a great success with Maximillian Eliott. He came 13th in the PSG and 8th in the Inter 1. A great start at a very strong competition.Somerford Premier League was another very succesful show. The first day had a few mistakes but Eliott came 10th in the PSG which was a good start. On the second day he came a very respectable 5th in the Inter 1 with over 66% and on the final day he gained 68.68% and came a very close 3rd, so all in all a very good show, roll on Wellington!!!!Jais pupils have had a good month too. The eventer Tim Cheffings has had some fantastic results, although the hard ground has not been very helpful, he has been very pleased with his dressage marks. Sophie Rowcliffe has been selected to compete for G.B at the young rider festival in Ireland in June - good luck Sophie! Debbie Randall has been very busy with her three horses, all of which are now qualified for regional championships from Novice to Advanced Medium, a real credit to her hard work over the winter.
